About the Island Marble Butterfly Program
We are dedicated biologists and conservationists working together to prevent extinction, increase abundance, and conserve island marble butterfly diversity. This work is a collaborative implementation of habitat requirements for the island marble butterfly to expand its occupied habitat. Many land managers are engaged in recovery efforts, and a growing number of private landowners are providing habitat. This is an exciting chapter in island marble butterfly conservation.
The Island Marble Volunteer Program is a program of the San Juan Islands Conservation District. The program has recently moved to the San Juan Islands Conservation District from On Sacred Ground Land Trust where it began through a cooperative agreement with the United States Fish and Wildlife Service.

San Juan Islands Conservation District
San Juan Islands Conservation District is a non-regulatory, government entity established to provide landowners and residents with technical and financial assistance to meet regional natural resource conservation goals. The District also works with USFWS' Partners for Fish and Wildlife and Coastal programs to establish island marble butterfly habitat with landowners across the former known range of the species. |
Walt Andrews
Island Marble Butterfly Volunteer Coordinator [email protected] 360-375-3070 Walt is an ecologist who has worked in research, conservation, and education. Walt is the Natural Resource Project Manager for the island marble butterfly at the San Juan Islands Conservation District. The Conservation District works with landowners and USFWS to expand and maintain habitat for this species. Walt's current research includes the establishment of native pollinator habitat in pastures. He works in conservation planning, and Walt is excited about the possibilities in front of us to provide much needed habitat for this butterfly that is found nowhere else in the world. |
